A New Year's Day Swim at Westward Ho! really launched the year in style! The beach was filled with swimmers yesterday as perhaps 1000 people jumped in the sea and thousands more cheered them on. On even the busiest days in the Summer I have never seen the beach so crowded... With Sandymere flooded there was real problems finding anywhere to park!
For the tingle you enjoy when you get out of the water (and the clearing of any residual thick head) a New Year's Day swim in the sea can not be matched!
This year the Westward Ho! swim saw hundreds take to the water, many in fancy dress but very few in a "banned" wetsuit! There was hardly a breath of wind and despite the grey skies and lack of sun, it was a mild day and practically perfect swimming conditions!
A quick run into the sea (our rule is at least twelve breast-strokes - a dunk of the head under a wave being optional) makes every bit of skin tingle and feels so invigorating! A fabulous way to start a new year! Whizz home and enjoy the luzury of a soak in the hot tub and you start to feel invincible. What a shame the feeling doesn't last until the 2nd Jan.... perhaps we should swim in the sea every day in 2020?
